"The mission of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society is to end the devastating effects of MS.

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic, unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system. An overactive immune system attacks the body's own tissue in the brain and spinal cord.  The result is a loss of insulating material surrounding the nerve fibers and damage to the nerve fibers themselves.  This blocks or scrambles nerve messages.

Over 400,000 Americans have MS and someone is newly diagnosed each hour. MS typically strikes in the prime of life, between the ages of 20-50. An MS diagnosis changes a family's life forever. The National Multiple Sclerosis Society funds more MS research, offers more services to people with MS, provides more professional education programs and advances more advocacy efforts than any other MS organization in the world.
